Beautiful Netherlands – Schiermonnikoog

The well-known stamp series Mooi Nederland will be devoted to the Dutch Wadden Islands in 2019. Today the fifth stamp sheet from this series has been published, with ample attention to nature and the architecture of Schiermonnikoog. Stamps about Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling and Ameland appeared earlier this year. At the same time as the postage stamps on Schiermonnikoog, PostNL today released a compilation sheet for all 5 islands.

Scenic beauty

Since 2005, the Beautiful Netherlands series has focused on local history, cultural wealth and scenic beauty. The new series this year about the Dutch Wadden Islands was designed by Birza Design from Deventer.

Recognizable images of Schiermonnikoog

The island shape plays the leading role in the design of Beautiful Netherlands 2019: Schiermonnikoog. This is reflected in the map of Schiermonnikoog that the designers have placed on the stamps in miniature and on the sheet of stamps in large format. The stamps contain recognizable images of the island: the current lighthouse (Noordertoren), the former lighthouse (Zuidertoren), the lower jaw of a blue whale and the statue of the Schiere Monk, both of which are located in the village center. In the design, the typical shape of the island also returns in other ways. For example, the font of the captions is a so-called chest letter, made up of elements that are separate from each other.

Jovial and pleasant

Almost all the photos used date from a working visit to Schiermonnikoog by the graphic designers Ingmar and Carla Birza, in the sunny summer of 2018. Carla Birza praises the atmosphere of Schier. “Very pleasant, very pleasant. When the boat arrived, it was immediately noticeable how the wind affects tree growth. Hence the photo of the blown mountain ash. The Westerplas is a beautiful area where many waterfowl occur, with a bird-watching hut in the middle of the water. Schier also has special objects, of which we have included a few on the sheet. The images of the monks, of course. The huge whale jaw. And the special lines of Cape Kobbeduinen. On the sheet we also used our personal memories from our visit. Just think of that striking woolly of the bog fluff. Nice if you see it that way in nature. ”
